We live in interesting times.
Pandemics. Lockdowns. Mandates. Civil unrest. Contested elections. Our country is more divided today than it has been since the Civil War. Society and technology are changing quickly, and our laws and lawmakers struggle to keep up.
Some of our leaders, both here in Idaho and in Washington DC, desperately want things to return to normal. They want to go back to 2014, before Donald Trump changed American politics, or to 2008, before Barack Obama set out to fundamentally transform our nation. Some want to go back to the familiar days of the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan was in the White House and Russia was our implacable foe.
In Boise, leaders such as Governor Brad Little, House Speaker Scott Bedke, Senate Pro Tempore Chuck Winder, and many others want things to keep going as they have been for many years. They want plaudits from conservatives in Idaho for cutting taxes and regulations, while ignoring the elephants in the room of employer vaccine mandates and the transformation of our public schools into Marxist indoctrination facilities.
Conservative Americans - Republicans, traditionalists, populists, nationalists, whatever you want to call the core of America that still honors our nation’s founders, adheres to Christian morality, and believes that America was once a force for good in the world - we are watching our country collapse before our very eyes. One state after another has fallen to dystopian leftism. The same progressives, the same Marxists who turned California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado blue look hungrily at the Gem State.
Saving our state and our country will entail more than simply slowing the march of totalitarian progressivism. We cannot simply conserve the most recent gains of the Marxist left, as conservatives have been doing for decades. We have to roll them back. But that does not mean going back in time to 2008, 1984, or 1952. It means going forward with new ideas based on timeless principles.
We can no longer ignore the specter of big businesses imposing their will upon the people, whether they are Big Tech firms censoring dissenting voices or Idaho’s healthcare conglomerates forcing vaccines on their employees.
We can no longer let our natural support of the military inure us to endless foreign wars, spending untold blood and treasure to export wokeism across the world. Neither can we let our enthusiasm for law enforcement blind us to how police departments have been used to crack down on innocent people doing business or defending themselves from lawless mobs.
Rather than simply taking a position against whatever the left is pushing today, a new conservatism must stand for something real, something tangible, something that will allow American families to live and prosper in this new world.
My name is Brian Almon. I am a small business owner, writer, and political activist living in the heart of the Treasure Valley of Idaho. I left my beloved homeland of Western Washington when taxes and regulation became too much to bear, and I came to Idaho because the people here shared my values. In my lifetime, I watched my home state go from being a libertarian paradise to a third-world hellhole due to the extreme left-wing policies of elected leaders and bureaucrats in Olympia. The Republican Party of Washington is driftless and demoralized, with no idea how to fight back against organized Marxism.
Looking back on my old home state, I am thankful that I left when I did. Using the Covid-19 pandemic as an excuse, Governor Inslee and his friends have imposed the same sort of tyranny on their citizens that we once only read about in history books. Masks. Vaccines. Lockdowns. Today, Inslee announced that he supported a bill to ban any criticism of electoral integrity.
We must not let that happen to Idaho. This land has long been known as “America’s Redoubt,” because when the rest of the country falls, the last stand happens here.
But there are sinister forces at work. Democratic activists, many of whom are funded by extreme left-wing billionaires like George Soros, are trying to take over our state piece by piece. They will try to capture our Secretary of State office, to control who counts our votes. They will try to capture our county sheriffs departments, to allow lawlessness and thuggery to go unpunished while persecuting law-abiding citizens. They will try to capture our county councils, city councils, health district boards, and public school boards. Once in power they will not hesitate to use every lever they can find to push this state further leftward.
Stopping these forces requires more than just token participation in our democracy. We must not only defend what we have but reclaim the occupied territory of our public schools, colleges and universities, and big cities like Boise. All of us must awaken to the danger at hand and focus on fighting back, so that our children and our children’s children will have the opportunity to live in freedom. Ronald Reagan said that every generation must fight to preserve their liberties. For too long we have taken them for granted.
Many in our current leadership do not appreciate the gravity of the situation. The politicians club would rather compromise our liberties than take a stand that might get them disinvited from posh cocktail parties or jeopardize campaign contributions from big business and special interests. Many are simple ignorant of what is happening, too lost to the minutiae of political wheeling and dealing to notice the bigger picture. Some of these leaders might be convincible, but most simply need to retire and allow a new generation of patriots to take the reigns of our government.
I intend to use this newsletter to share my thoughts on what is happening in Idaho and in our country. I want to help you be informed, to know what is going on, and to understand the historical context. I want to encourage and motivate you to get involved at the local level, to build a movement that is capable of saving our state and our country. I invite you to join me on this journey as we struggle to preserve the Gem State for our own posterity.
