In Part 1 of this series I introduced the Great Reset, a long-planned reordering of our economy and our society. In Part 2 I discussed Critical Theory, a way of looking at the world that casts certain people as oppressors and others as oppressed, which demands we tear down every facet of society to correct perceived injustices. Today I look at one of the many tools that the Marxist left is using to accomplish their goals: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, or DEI.
Note: You will usually see the initials DEI, but I believe it makes more sense to order them diversity/inclusion/equity instead. Read on to find out why!
You would be hard pressed to find any part of our culture today that does not involve diversity, equity, or inclusion. In fact, if aliens monitored our discourse they might reasonably assume that Diversity is the name of our chief god. Consider:
The NFL has a rule that forces teams to interview at least one non-white candidate for every coaching vacancy.
Hollywood movies that do not meet a certain threshold for racial and sexual diversity are banned from consideration for the Academy Awards.
When Islamic terrorist and Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan murdered thirteen people at Fort Hood in 2009, President Obama’s chief of the Army said, “…as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that's worse.”
The road to Hell is paved with good intentions. Marxists and progressives rarely come right and say that they intend to destroy our civilization, starve us to death, and lock the survivors in concentration camps, though that is often the end result of their ideology. No, they claim that they want to make the world a better place. Most of us have been conditioned since preschool to have a favorable impression of the words diversity, equity, and inclusion, which makes it difficult to criticize these issues. After all, who wants to be seen as opposing diversity? You’re not a racist, are you? To put it plainly, DEI means more for groups that are considered oppressed according to Marxist Critical Theory and less for those that are considered oppressors.
Every revolution requires an aggrieved population. It was the lower classes of tsarist Russia that were the foot soldiers of Lenin’s Marxist revolution which birthed the Soviet Union. Western Europe and the United States were far too prosperous, even for the lower classes, for such a revolution to occur here. Activists such as Herbert Marcuse realized that they would need to find a new reason to motivate their foot soldiers, so they settled upon race.
Now, the descendants of African slaves have a reasonable complaint about their position in this country. Their ancestors did not come to the New World of their own volition to be pioneers, but in shackles. Slavery has, of course, existed since the dawn of humanity, but the African slave trade created an entire servile class within American society, a class that remained on the bottom rung even after slavery was abolished. As Malcolm X said, “We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us.”
However, that valid complaint has become an unlimited credit card. We are told that we must pay reparations for slavery, that white Americans owe black Americans an unpayable debt, that systemic racism pervades every part of our society. We are told that the death of 600,000 Americans in the Civil War - the cost of ending slavery - was not enough, neither were the decades of welfare spending, affirmative action, and preferential hiring. We are told to ignore the overwhelming prevalence of black men in violent crime statistics.
Marxists have been exploiting the plight of black Americans for more than half a century. They simultaneously inflame their grievances, urging them to fight the system that has allegedly been oppressing them, while at the same time preventing them from actually solving any real problems. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was supposed to end state-sponsored discrimination and create a level playing field for black Americans, but polls show that black Americans are more pessimistic about the American dream today than they were half a century ago.
Why? Because foot soldiers of the Marxist revolution must be kept in a state of constant outrage in order to be effective. The last decade has seen lie after lie used to gin up outrage in the black community: Remember being told that Trayvon Martin was an innocent teen murdered by an evil white Hispanic? What about hands up, don’t shoot?. Every time a black criminal is injured or killed in an altercation with police, news media pours gasoline on the first, hoping to start yet another riot.
The Civil Rights Act also opened the door for every other interest group to engage in government rent seeking. By mandating that government correct social inequities, the Act created a pathway for any aggrieved minority group to demand satisfaction. It encouraged people to organize in such a way as to accentuate victimhood. Anyone who can claim to have been oppressed by white male Christian American society now has an avenue for profit. Remember intersectionality? It is more than just academic in a world of quotas, affirmative action, and endless lawsuits.
Somewhere between 1964 and today, elite American society decided that diversity was our highest good. Anything is permissible if done in the name of diversity, equity, or inclusion. Universities now have diversity departments that are larger and more expensive than their history staffs. Go to any leftist meeting and they will open not with a prayer, but an acknowledgement that they are standing on stolen land. When President Trump assembled his cabinet in early 2017, corporate media could only talk about how white it was. Remember the iconic picture of firefighters raising an American flag in the rubble of the World Trade Center after 9/11? A statue commemorating this moment was rejected because the three men were all white.
Marxists learned that if they could keep minority groups in a constant state of outrage, then they would be loyal soldiers of the revolution, and black Americans have long been the point of the Marxist spear. When career criminal George Floyd died in police custody two years ago, it was the impetus for months of prolonged rioting that caused billions of dollars in damage and left dozens dead. The Marxist left considers that to be a good start. The reason that the BLM/Antifa riots were defended by corporate media while the January 6th protests were condemned was not because of the location, intensity, or bloodshed, but rather what Lenin called “who, whom?” Who is doing what to whom is the only factor that matters.
If diversity is now the chief goal of society, then what is its opposite? Whiteness. The commissars of Critical Theory have declared whiteness to be a pathology in our culture. Everything we take for granted about modern civilization is vilified and marked for destruction in the new order. The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of African-American History released an infographic a few years ago that denounced many things we would consider universal values as aspects of whiteness, including rugged individualism, the nuclear family, an interest in history, a belief in hard work, a commitment to being on time, an appreciation for beauty, and a sense of justice.
I think most Republicans still believe in the colorblind society. They assume that the left is acting in good faith with their promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and so they are willing to meet them halfway, to compromise. This is a grievous mistake. The Marxist left long ago discarded the idea of colorblindness; in fact, if you claim to not see race they will say that is a feature of white supremacy, and proof of your vile racism.
The modern Marxist left is pushing an explicitly racist agenda that seeks to displace the old American stock in favor of a new one. Remember that the goal of Critical Theory is to tear down Western Civilization so it can be replaced with something new. The Great Reset is the mechanism, and diversity/equity/inclusion is one of the tools. Remember the Time Magazine cover story about the Great Reset? Several of the articles under that umbrella are about how the brave new world will be better for so-called people of color.
Good Americans believe that all men (and women) are created equal by God, and deserve equal protection under the law. The left does not share that belief, and we cannot allow them to play word games to hide their true intentions.
