Finally, last Friday was the 48th anniversery of the largest and most recent sinking on Lake Superior. SS Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest freighter on the Great Lakes, carrying iron ore back and forth from mines in Duluth, Minnesota to foundries near Detroit, Michigan. She encountered rough weather on the November 10, 1975, disappearing from radio and radar shortly after 7pm. 29 men lost their lives, and were memorialized in song by the great Gordon Lightfoot:
