Well, do you really believe that young U.S. citizens are willing and able to work on farms, and dairies? That is demanding work, and unless you are in a farm or dairy family, a young adult would rather be playing or designing video games. So, until the Federal immigration laws are relaxed to allow more foreign workers to enter this country legally to do the work that no average citizen wants to do, it will be "status quo"
Yes, our culture needs to be reset and American young people should be expected to work. But, they need to need to work. Stop the handouts and debt-building enticements. I can't believe students get an entertainment allowance built into their student loan packages.
Parents need to expect more from their teenagers and young adults. Don't pay for their phone, car insurance, salon appointments, and Spring break vacations.
And the mantra that Americans won't do certain jobs so we should just have illegals do them, needs to stop. Removing the ability to hire illegals is a start.
I have to ask myself if the status quo as Mr. Drake referred to is the best direction for the nation as a whole. I think not.
My parents stressed a work ethic and that has benefited me greatly. If we stressed education outcomes in America we would not need foreign workers from countries that stressed education outcomes to bail us out because our kids lack basic math and science skills.
What’s needed is a social reset and some tough love for American kids. I for one am willing to pay more for milk and cabbage farmed by American people.
We can start by stopping payments and incentives to not work.
I have been thinking that there should be a kind of tariff on hiring foreign workers, say 25% above their wages. Allow as many in as want to work, but charge a tariff on their wages. Therefore hiring American citizens would be cheaper or they could be paid higher wages to induce them to do this hard work. Of course, there should be no government benefits for foreign workers. That should be a condition of entry—no government benefits until you become a citizen. And we need to eliminate government benefits for the able-bodied citizens as well. Democrats would try to block those changes, but they would work.
No one should come here illegally, and those who have done so should be deported or made to leave.
