As a Nation, America still matters. However, as a Capitalist Society, I fear that corporate greed will seek the least expensive employees to build and service their products, either here in the USA or somewhere else in the world.
So, I see electronics from US corporations made somewhere else in the world, but not here. When I call for technical support, I speak to someone in an Asian country, who is hard for me to understand and solve my problems. So, I struggle to find solutions to electronic problems. God, I wish I could go back to the 20th Century.
Foreign, immigrant labor, however, is necessary in some industries, like agriculture. I believe that American teenagers will avoid farm labor jobs in agriculture and dairies. So, foreign labor is needed. US labor, however, is urgently needed for soliciting political donations and subscription renewals. I am glad that we still have American citizens to repair houses, cars, medical care, insurance, etc.
So, the 21st Century Sucks. We rely on foreign labor to build products cheaper or do work no one here wants to do. I am glad that at age 79 plus, I will not see the Fall of the US Empire
There is a socialized cost in the form of government support for American citizens who cannot find jobs. Hiring workers from abroad (especially illegal immigrants) imposes that cost on the American taxpayers because we end up supporting the people who are unemployed as a result. Economists could figure out that cost. Then there should be a tariff imposed on hiring foreign workers equal to the cost being imposed on American taxpayers by hiring foreign workers. That tariff might be enough to make American workers, who demand higher wages, competitive with foreign labor. It certainly would encourage companies to work harder to attract American workers. And it would not prevent high tech companies from getting the talent they need by using the H1-B visa to import workers. They would just have to pay for it.
The current abuses of the H1B visa program are a bureaucratic wealth transfer from the middle class taxpayer to the the corporate elite. As such the entire program should be either eliminated entirely or have major safeguards enacted to protect the enterest of average Americans.
